Local conservation organisation The International Whaling Commission (IWC) is launching an art competition to mark 80 years of its work researching and regulating the whaling industry.
Launching on World Earth Day (22 April) and as part of its activities to commemorate 80 years of whale “science and stewardship”, the competition follows the theme of “A whale of a journey – 80 years of the International Whaling Commission” and the commission is inviting young people to submit marine themed artwork.
The commission, based in Victory House on Histon’s Vision Park, is the global body responsible for management of whaling and conservation of whales.
Feeling creative?
A spokesperson for the IWC said: “If you are interested in the ocean and feeling creative, we would love to hear from you. All artworks are welcome. You may want to create an image of your favourite whale species, celebrate whales in their marine habitat, or explore the threats facing whales today”.

Artworks can be in any media, including moving images and animation.
The competition is open to entrants from all over the world and invites young people aged between 4 and 18 with two categories for entrants. The first for ages 4-11, and a second for anyone aged 12-18.
The winning entries, including an overall winner and two runners-up in each category, will be chosen by IWC Executive Secretary, Martha Rojas Urrego and all entrants will be awarded a certificate.
The competition launched on Wednesday 22 April and closes on Wednesday 5 August 2026.
Artwork should be photographed or scanned and submitted as A4 size. Entries can be submitted as JPG or PNG for images or GIF files for animations. All entries should be sent via email to artcompetition@iwc.int For more information visit the IWC website here.
