St Andrew’s Centre café offers up its walls to local artists

-

The Saint Andrew’s Centre café is offering local artists the chance to display their work for free.

In a bid to expand its community engagement, the café on School Hill, Histon is inviting local artists to get in touch with a view to showcasing their art on the café walls. The artworks will also be available for customers to purchase.

The largely volunteer-run café has previously displayed paintings by artists from the community on a more casual basis but is now reaching out to find new and upcoming artists; offering them the opportunity to share their work with café-goers for a period of one-two months at a time.

Current artists on display are Rui Mo and Penny Frith. Rui, a village resident, is currently exhibiting watercolours featuring spring birds, lambs and plant life, as well as paintings created using Chinese brush painting techniques.

Penny paints in oils and has three works on display in the café in shades of blue featuring sweeping ‘skyscapes’. Both artists’ works are on display until 30 June and can be purchased by café customers for prices starting from £100.

Showcasing “hidden talents”

Jacquie Atkinson who oversees the project told HI HUB: “The idea is to champion the hidden talents within our village, to share their work, create interest and hopefully sales. The artwork will also hopefully bring more people into the café. The plan is to have a mix of artists’ work on the walls with a mix of prices”.

Chris Cox, one of the directors of the café said: “A really good way of engaging with the community is by connecting our customers with the many diverse and talented artists who live locally.

“Previously, we have hosted long running displays from Stephen Tromans and the late Bernard Stewart-Deane. We are looking forward to expanding this project in the future”.
