Residents can now use a new online tool to check whether they are likely to need planning permission before carrying out building work or making changes to their property.
Greater Cambridge Shared Planning has launched a free “Do I Need Planning Permission?” service, which takes users through a series of questions about their proposed project before providing guidance based on planning legislation and local restrictions.
The tool is intended to help householders and those considering small-scale developments understand whether their home improvement plans may require a formal planning application. It can also highlight restrictions affecting individual properties, including whether a property is a listed building or within a conservation area.
Accessing information
Planning permission is required for some types of development, while other works may be covered by permitted development rights and can be carried out without submitting a planning application.
To use the new service, residents need to provide the address of the property and details of the work or changes they are considering. The tool then provides guidance based on their answers. However, the results are not an official planning decision or legal advice.
Residents who require formal confirmation that proposed or existing building works or a change of use is lawful can apply for a Lawful Development Certificate through the Planning Portal.
Cllr Henry Batchelor, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s Lead Cabinet Member for Planning, said: “This new online tool will help residents find information more quickly and understand the planning requirements that may apply to their property.
“By guiding people through a series of questions and providing tailored advice, the service will make it easier for residents to take the first steps in planning their projects.”
It is hoped the “Do I Need Planning Permission?” tool will reduce the number of routine enquiries to the planning service, and allow staff to spend more time processing applications and dealing with more complex proposals.
Access the tool at the Greater Cambridge Share Planning website.
