Residents are invited to share their views on plans to create a new corporation aimed at accelerating growth and development in Greater Cambridge.
The Government describes Greater Cambridge as “one of Britain’s most important engines of growth”, home to world-class research institutions and a global leader in innovation. The region is also a major contributor to the UK economy.
However, ministers say the area faces “critical constraints” that are limiting its potential as a place to live and work.
“These challenges are not new, and local institutions have worked hard to address them over many years,” the Government said.
To tackle these pressures, it is proposing the creation of a Greater Cambridge Development Corporation. Such Government-established Urban Development Corporations have powers to coordinate large-scale regeneration and infrastructure projects.
Consultation details
According to the proposal, the corporation would work in partnership with local councils and communities to deliver an infrastructure-first approach to major development sites.
The Government said this would benefit both existing and new communities while supporting long-term economic growth.
James Rixon, a councillor who represents the village at South Cambridgeshire District Council explained on social media the proposals “will affect development across Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire for years to come”.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has now launched a public consultation related to the plans. Residents and businesses have until 11:59pm on 1 April to take part.
Participants are being asked for their views on establishing the corporation, its objectives and activities, and the geographical area it would cover.
Reaction
Meanwhile, Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, warned that the region’s global standing “isn’t guaranteed”.
He said: “My message to Government has long been that we’re ready to deliver, but ministers must match our ambition. Our Local Growth Plan is intentionally the most ambitious in the country, and delivering it means tackling infrastructure constraints we’ve put off for too long.
“That is why I welcome the £400 million of Government funding already committed to accelerate development in the area, and it’s encouraging to see Government now consulting on a Greater Cambridge development corporation.
“If a development corporation can speed up delivery of the Local Growth Plan, and make Cambridgeshire and Peterborough healthier, wealthier and happier as a result, it deserves serious consideration.”
Residents and businesses can take part in the consultation via the Government’s online platform before the 1 April deadline.
