Students from Impington International College (IIC) participated in the South Cambridgeshire District, Town and Parish election count which took place on Friday 8 May.
The opportunity to see how elections are administered, counted and verified came at the invitation of South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC).
The group of seven IIC students, some of whom study Global Politics at the college, spent around six hours at the count, listening in to the counters’ briefing before joining other participants at the counting tables.
“Valuable opportunity”
The students witnessed how spoiled ballots are handled and how individual ballots contribute to the wider picture across the district. They also saw election observers from different political parties monitoring the process, which according to IVC Assistant Principal Christopher Gee “helped bring ideas around transparency and accountability to life” for the students.
He shared: “It was a genuinely fascinating experience. We are very grateful to SCDC for inviting the students to take part in such a valuable opportunity. The visit was also an important IB CAS experience, particularly as a service activity connected to civic participation and community responsibility”.
One of the students at the count told HI HUB: “Being at the election count was an incredible experience. We got to learn about how the democratic system is fulfilled and it gave us a greater insight into local politics”.
All seven students are also involved in the Model United Nations of Cambridge event, which IIC is hosting at the West Hub from 30 June to 2 July 2026.
