South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) is urging more residents to make use of the mobile warden schemes it helps to fund and has created a new video that highlights the benefits of doing so.
The video – called Helping residents stay independent for longer with Mobile Wardens – will be shown in doctor surgeries to encourage more people to use the service, aimed at enabling older people in the community to live independently, safely and happily in their own home for longer.
“Connection, reassurance and dignity”
The scheme is designed to be an affordable way to access support alongside more formal care services. Mobile wardens’ responsibilities can include daily phone calls, client visits, collecting shopping, helping with form filling, collection and dropping off prescriptions and helping service users access other services.
Additionally, wardens also undertake practical tasks such as washing up, putting bins out, watering plants and posting letters, making drinks and generally listening to concerns.
Councillor Dr Lisa Redrup, Lead Cabinet Member for Healthy Communities at SCDC said: “Our Mobile Warden Schemes are a fantastic example of community-based support making a real difference to people’s lives.
“They are not just about practical help – they are about connection, reassurance and dignity. Having someone you trust checking in regularly can make all the difference in helping people feel safe, confident and less isolated.”
Local hero
Kirsty Speed is Histon and Impington’s mobile warden. With the support of H&I Parish Council alongside SCDC funding, Kirsty’s role is to help reduce loneliness, boost confidence and help people stay independent at home in the Village.
Currently H&I has around 20 residents using the warden scheme but slots frequently open up and Kirsty is available to take on other clients.
Kirsty said: “We have availability for more people to use our services, so if you’re an older person in Histon & Impington who would like some support – or you know someone who does – do get in touch. We even offer a two-week free trial of our services.”
Residents or family members who would like to find out more, or refer someone for help can visit www.scambs.gov.uk/mobile-warden-schemes; Kirsty can be contacted at kirsty.speed@ageukcap.org.uk or on 07957 608 530.

While this is an excellent scheme and does fill a gap for some.Clients get a phone call each day and a visit once a week. When its a bank holiday ie Easter they have no contact for 4 days which is a long time if you are unable to get out and have no next of kin
