The UK’s landline system will be fully replaced by digital technology by 31 January 2027.
The national upgrade in communication is known as the Digital Switchover. The process, previously reported on by HI HUB – and which is already under way locally – will see 130-year-old landline infrastructure replaced by broadband connections in a bid to make services “more future-proof, reliable, and ready to support modern digital communications”.
By the end of January 2027, all traditional landlines will be switched off and replaced by digital services.
Stay connected
While phone lines only carry voice calls, fibre optic cables are much better at handling modern digital communication needs such as broadband, video, and data services.
Householders’ telephone providers such as BT, Sky or Virgin are responsible for switching them to the upgraded service; however, Connecting Cambridgeshire is continuing to encourage residents to check if and how the change will affect them – particularly those who rely on their landline or use a telecare device, medical alarms or other care devices.
The Connecting Cambridgeshire programme, hosted by Cambridgeshire County Council and led by Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority is working with local councils, government bodies and external organisations to offer support to businesses and communities to help keep them connected.
Help is at hand
The Digital Switchover will affect both residential and business phone lines. Phone providers will contact customers if their home or business is affected, but for those unsure what to do next, Connecting Cambridgeshire has these three tips:
- Call your phone company and ask whether the change will affect you and your phone line. Use the number on your latest bill and ask for customer services.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. A trusted friend, relative or neighbour may be able to make the call to your provider on your behalf.
- Watch out for scams. No provider will ask for money up front. If something does not feel right, hang up straight away.
