Bramley Court residents welcomed the local community into their much-loved garden as part of H&I’s 10th Open Gardens event.

Residents showcased the home’s wrap-around garden, designed with inclusivity and accessibility in mind, and raised over £300 through donations and by serving afternoon tea on the day.

Keen gardener and resident Jenny Phillips who was one of the founding members of Open Gardens when the event first took place in 2007 said: “It was wonderful to be part of Open Gardens again. The gardens here are a joy and we were pleased to share them with our friends and neighbours.”

Sensory space

The care home’s outdoor space includes wheelchair-friendly raised beds, sensory planting such as herbs and fragrant roses, and mobile gardens in wheelbarrows which can be moved around the home, allowing residents to enjoy nature from their rooms, balconies or outdoor seating areas.

Residents work closely with the home’s gardener Jen Lumb to ensure the garden reflects their personalities, memories and interests, and traditional cottage garden planting is used to spark reminiscence and conversation.

Jen said: “The Bramley garden is very much a team effort. Residents regularly share ideas and memories, which inspires what we plant and create”.
