Local MP Ian Sollom paid a visit to a meeting of the Histon and Impington Sustainability Group earlier this month where he spoke to members about environmental and climate issues and took part in a Q&A session.
Topics covered at the meeting, which was attended by around 40 people, included renewable energy, building standards, and the need for better design and implementation of solar panels in new developments.
The MP also heard residents’ concerns around issues of water management, flood risks, the ecological impact of farming on Fenland soils, and the UK’s status as one of the most nature-depleted countries on the planet.
Local action
The MP heard about existing H&I Sustainability initiatives including waste-reduction schemes such as the ‘Swish’, eco home tours, tree planting and measures to support wildlife.
He also discussed linking up with other MPs across East Anglia in order to form a critical mass to better represent regional sustainability issues in Parliament.
Kate Warwick for Histon and Impington Sustainability Group said: “The meeting went well and a wide range of questions from the audience were answered fully by Ian.”
“Open conversations”
Ian Sollom MP said: “The meeting showed the depth of local climate and environmental interest in Histon and Impington and the value of open conversations in addressing concerns and planning future work. Long-term, evidence-led work is essential if communities are to move forward sustainably.
“It was a pleasure to meet such an active and committed group, and I look forward to further engagement with them in future”.
