The head of a specialist school in Impington says she is “blown away by the generosity of the community” for contributing towards its fundraising efforts. The Friends of Cavendish School, an independent charity that raises funds to support the school, raised £6,000 last year.
The money was raised through a combination of community events, parent fundraising and corporate and private donations. The Holiday Inn Impington and Histon High Street florist, Gin House Flowers, were among the businesses that contributed towards the cause.
Students also helped by running Christmas decoration stalls, a summer jumble sale and a ‘guess the name of the stick insect’ game to raise funds.
Since receiving the funds, the school has purchased new outdoor gym equipment to help students self-regulate throughout the day. They have also enjoyed end of term treats such as ice cream, and received seasonal gifts including Christmas presents.
Donated equipment like laptops, sensory toys, games and craft supplies are also being used to strengthen students’ daily learning and welfare.
Supporting learning

Stephanie Smith, Head of The Cavendish School, said: “Whether people have made a financial or physical donation, they have helped enhance the educational experience of our students and provide a school environment where our students feel secure and know their needs will be met.
“With the continued help of our community, I hope that we can raise more funds to provide more much-needed sensory equipment and items that help our students to access learning that meets their individual needs.”
The Cavendish School opened in August 2021 and offers specialist provision for young people with autism. It is currently collaborating with the International Baccalaureate to develop and deliver the first IB programmes specifically tailored to the needs of autistic students.
