Impington’s Cavendish School is celebrating its first ever set of BTEC results and its second year of GCSE results.
In the 2025/26 academic year every student who studied the BTEC Level 1 in Esports achieved a pass grade and 37 per cent of students who sat their GCSEs achieved a grade 4 or higher – including in Maths and English.
The figures put Year 10 pupils at the school above the national average for GCSE passes for students with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) – which is 13 per cent.
Gradual approach to assessment
The school, which is Cambridgeshire’s first state-maintained free school for autistic students has offered the BTEC qualification since September 2024 and was the first special school in Cambridgeshire to do so.
Summer 2026 also saw some of the school’s first cohort of students since it opened its doors in 2021 sit their exams.
Staff at the school describe taking a “gradual approach” to assessments focusing on “inquiry-based learning” to develop students’ social, emotional and physical wellbeing; and their confidence, communication and leadership skills.
“No ceiling” to students’ aspirations
Highlighting the Cavendish’s success, Head of School, Stephanie Smith said: “We are extremely proud of all our students for the determination and resilience they have shown during their studies. There are no ceilings on these children’s aspirations or their ability to achieve.
“We are delighted to see individual successes across the cohort as well as in the first set of Esports BTEC results, which reflect the breadth of academic and vocational opportunities for our students to pursue their strengths and interests as they prepare for adulthood.”
