Bus driver strikes postponed for talks to resume

-

Planned strikes by bus drivers and engineers based in Cambridge this week were suddenly postponed for talks to resume.

Two hundred Stagecoach workers were planning to walk out on Monday (26 January), yesterday (28 January) and tomorrow (30 January) as part of an ongoing dispute over pay.

But the planned strike action was suspended, with Stagecoach informing customers that services would be operating at their full timetable. The union, Unite, confirmed the postponement is to allow for further talks with the bus company.

Darren Roe, Managing Director for Stagecoach East said: “We welcome Unite’s decision to return to talks and avoid further disruption this week. We are keen to return to full operation of essential bus services that our customers depend on and remain dedicated to finding a resolution.”

Upcoming strike dates are still scheduled for 9, 11 and 13 February. Guided Busway and Park and Ride services should not be affected.

Crossing survey

Meanwhile, residents have until the end of next Thursday (5 February) to complete a survey to establish where a Busway crossing point could be re-introduced in Histon.

Last year, Cambridgeshire County Council controversially closed informal crossing points along the Guided Busway as part of ongoing safety measures. After extensive community campaigning, £2 million was allocated to reinstate one of the Histon crossing points and others along the route. It was also agreed a new bus stop would be considered north of Histon.

A previous community survey found that the most used informal crossings were at The Community Orchard and Manor Park. The Council is now seeking views on whether one of these locations – or even another point along the Busway – would be most suitable for the formal crossing point.

Cambridgeshire County Council’s Busway crossings survey is available here. It closes next Thursday (5 February) at 11:59pm.
